Quick take: Tech Mahindra was the top Nifty 50 performer on Friday, October 16, rising about 7% after its Q2 FY27 results, and it dragged the whole IT pack higher while the broader market was otherwise fighting profit-taking and foreign selling.
What happened
Tech Mahindra reported consolidated net profit of ₹1,585.6 crore for July-September, up 32.74% from ₹1,194.5 crore a year earlier. Revenue rose 15.6% to ₹16,180.2 crore. Sequentially, profit grew about 8% and revenue about 3%. Reports attribute the improvement to volume growth, cost savings and the weaker rupee.
The board also recommended a 1:1 bonus issue, the first in 11 years (the previous one was in March 2015), subject to shareholder approval by postal ballot, plus an interim dividend of ₹15 per share with a record date of October 23. Brokerage notes cited deal bookings (total contract value) of $1,023 million, up 25.4% year on year, and said headcount rose for the first time in four quarters.
On the day, the stock gained 7.15% to ₹1,766.70 on the BSE, adding roughly ₹10,975 crore to its market capitalisation, which stood near ₹1.73 lakh crore.
Why it mattered for the index
Thursday’s close was strong: Nifty ended at 22,997.35, its highest since September 25, with Sensex at 74,315.61. Friday opened softer, with the Nifty near 22,963 in early trade, as traders booked profits and foreign institutions kept selling. FIIs sold equities worth ₹5,285.37 crore on Thursday, and Reliance gave back part of its previous rally.
IT cushioned the fall and then flipped the market positive. Infosys rose nearly 4%, TCS about 3.3% and HCLTech over 1%, while Wipro also gained after its own results. Business Standard’s live blog reported Nifty IT up more than 3%, the best sector of the day. By around 1 PM IST the Sensex was at 74,621.26 (+305.65 points, +0.41%) and the Nifty at 23,103.80 (+106.45 points, +0.46%). Financials such as HDFC Life, SBI Life and Jio Financial were among the Nifty 50 laggards.
Reading the signals, and the caveats
A bonus issue does not change the value of a company; it splits the same pie into more slices. What it can signal is board confidence and a wish to widen retail participation. The sharper message is the earnings quality: deal wins above $1 billion in each of the last four quarters, per the company’s CEO as reported.
There are caveats. Part of the profit lift came from rupee depreciation, which is not a repeatable operating gain. Dolat Capital flagged pricing pressure and rising productivity expectations among the risks, and said further margin expansion depends on AI-driven efficiencies. Wipro’s guidance for next quarter, a 1.5% decline to 0.5% growth in constant-currency IT services revenue, is a reminder that the sector’s demand picture is uneven. Brent crude near $105.3 a barrel and persistent FII outflows remain the macro backdrop.
What to watch next
- Whether the Nifty holds above the 23,000 mark it reclaimed this week, or the IT rally fades into the close.
- FII and DII data for today, to see if foreign selling is easing.
- Tech Mahindra’s ex-dividend date around the October 23 record date, and the bonus approval process.
- Remaining IT and banking results, including ICICI Bank and YES Bank, which also report this season.
