Quick take: On Friday, October 16, the headline profit number and the share price moved in opposite directions at two big names. Wipro’s bottom line fell year on year, yet the stock jumped. HDFC Life’s profit rose by double digits, yet the stock sold off. Earnings season is rewarding expectations, not growth rates.
What happened
As of about 11:00 AM IST, the Sensex was up 317.99 points (0.43%) at 74,633.60 and the Nifty 50 was up 106.70 points (0.46%) at 23,104.05. The session had started softer: at 10:00 AM the Sensex was down about 101 points and the Nifty about 24 points. IT and metal stocks supported the recovery, with Nifty IT the best-performing sector and Nifty Oil and Gas the weakest, according to Business Standard’s live coverage.
Wipro rose as much as 4.8% to ₹182.40 on the NSE even though its bottom line fell 1.4% year on year, and the report notes brokerages remained bearish. HDFC Life slid 3.3% to a day’s low of ₹532.60 despite a 16.5% year-on-year rise in net profit, and was among the Nifty 50’s top losers alongside Jio Financial Services and SBI Life Insurance. Tech Mahindra, Infosys and TCS led the IT gains in late-morning trade.
The sharpest move came from the smaller names. Cyient DLM fell 19% on heavy volume to an intraday low of ₹830.35 on the BSE, even though its Q2 FY27 net profit rose 5.9% to ₹34 crore. 360 One WAM spiked 3.6% at the open to ₹1,112 after reporting a 4.4% fall in profit to ₹302 crore, then gave the gain back and traded near ₹1,068.
Why the mismatch?
The sources do not offer a single explanation, so treat the following as a framework, not a verdict. A stock’s first reaction to results usually reflects the gap between the reported numbers and what was already priced in. A profit dip that was feared can read as relief; a profit beat that was anticipated can read as already in the price. Guidance, margins and order commentary often matter more than the headline line, and those details are what to read in the filings and management remarks.
Key numbers to track
- Nifty 50: 23,104.05 at 11:00 AM IST (Thursday’s close was 22,997 per our earlier post).
- Sensex: 74,633.60 at 11:00 AM IST.
- Wipro: intraday high ₹182.40 (+4.8%).
- HDFC Life: day’s low ₹532.60 (-3.3%).
- Cyient DLM: intraday low ₹830.35 (-19%).
What to watch next
Several more results are due today, including DLF, Punjab National Bank, Federal Bank, Oberoi Realty, Bajaj Housing Finance and Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals. Watch whether the IT-led lift holds into the close, how the broader market behaves (the live report showed mid- and small-caps slightly lower), and whether volume stays elevated in stocks that gapped on results. Separately, the RBI’s rupee defence continues to be a macro backdrop worth following.
