Oracle’s Credit Spread Widened 28 Basis Points in a Week. Wall Street Noticed.

Quick take: The loudest signal on Wall Street this week was not an index move. It was the price of insuring AI-linked debt. Hot inflation data pushed rate-hike fears back on the table just as credit markets began asking how the AI build-out gets financed.

What happened

On Wednesday, September CPI came in at 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% forecast and up from 3.4% in August. Core prices rose 0.3% month over month against a 0.2% forecast, and gasoline, up 9.1%, accounted for more than half of the monthly rise. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.9%, the S&P 500 lost 1.1%, and the Dow slipped 0.1%.

The hit was sharpest in AI-exposed names. CoreWeave dropped roughly 15 to 16%, Oracle fell about 9%, and Nvidia lost around 3%, according to market reports. On Thursday morning, September producer prices added to the pressure: reported headline PPI rose 1.3% month over month versus about 0.5% expected, with the annual rate at 6.3%. Core PPI rose 0.7% against a 0.3% forecast. Retail sales were firm at +0.8%, ahead of the 0.6% consensus.

Why the credit angle matters

Equity moves tell you about sentiment. Credit tells you about funding costs. One pre-market report put Oracle’s five-year credit default swap spread at 288 basis points, up from 260 a week earlier, a 28-point widening. The same report said CoreWeave’s spread topped 1,000 basis points, with its 2032 bonds yielding about 16%. Other coverage put the yields on its 2031 and 2032 bonds near 15%. The exact figure varies by source, but the direction is the same: lenders are demanding more to fund AI infrastructure while inflation keeps policy rates higher for longer.

That is the tension. Data-center spending is financed with large amounts of debt, and hotter inflation raises the odds that borrowing stays expensive. Fed hike odds for the October 27-28 meeting were reported at roughly 33% after the PPI print, though some Fed officials signalled they could wait for more data.

Key numbers

  • September CPI: 3.7% y/y (forecast 3.6%)
  • September PPI: +1.3% m/m, 6.3% y/y; core PPI +0.7% m/m
  • Nasdaq Composite Wednesday: -1.9%; Nasdaq 100 futures Thursday pre-market: roughly -1%
  • Oracle 5-year CDS: 288 bps vs 260 bps a week earlier
  • Brent crude: about $103.80, down roughly 2% in pre-market trade

There was good news inside the tech complex too. TSMC reported record third-quarter revenue of $46.72 billion and guided fourth-quarter revenue to $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion, yet its ADR still slipped pre-market, along with Micron (about -4%) and AMD (about -2%). Strong fundamentals are not shielding valuations when yields and credit costs move against them.

What to watch next

Watch whether the Oracle and CoreWeave spreads stabilise or keep widening, how Treasury yields react to the inflation prints, and the October 27-28 Fed meeting. Oil matters too: Brent above $100 keeps energy-driven inflation alive, and shipping risks near the Strait of Hormuz remain in the headlines. Note that figures above come from pre-market and previous-session reports and may have moved since.

Impact on Indian markets

Persistently high US yields and a stronger dollar tend to weigh on foreign flows into India, and crude near $100 pressures the rupee and import bill. Nifty IT can swing with the Nasdaq’s mood, since global tech sentiment feeds into the sector’s valuations.
