Cross-Market Theme Analysis | Late September–Mid October 2026
The Story
The Fed raised rates to 3.75–4.00% on 16 September, its first hike since July 2023. The RBI followed on 7 October with a 25 bps move to 5.50%, its first since February 2023. Different economies, same culprit: Brent crude above $100 for five straight weeks, now around $104.
Oil works through three channels. For the US it keeps inflation sticky, with CPI forecast at 3.6% and the 10-year yield above 5.2%, near two-decade highs. For India, a big crude importer, it widens the trade deficit (forecast $29.5 billion for September), pushes the rupee to record lows near ₹97 and lifts CPI (forecast 5.40%). For both, it shrinks the room central banks have to support growth.
The two markets respond differently. The US index is still near record highs, S&P 500 at about 7,805 and Nasdaq at about 27,200, held up by AI earnings. India’s Nifty, near 22,500, has had eight losing weeks and foreign investors have sold about ₹3.08 lakh crore year to date.
