What Drove the Quarter
- Aluminum segment: Adjusted EBITDA of $862M versus $1,073M in Q2 as shipments fell 5% after elevated Q2 volumes.
- Alumina segment: Moved to breakeven (-$1M) from -$96M as the Pinjarra refinery stabilized and alumina output rose 11% sequentially.
- Operations: Aluminum output rose for a sixth straight quarter, with several year-to-date production records.
- Portfolio: A deal to sell part of Massena East could bring up to $315M of cash.
What Management Said
Full-year production and shipment guidance was reaffirmed. For Q4, management expects higher production and shipments, flat alumina EBITDA, and about $30M of added aluminum costs from raw materials and maintenance. The AliGroup acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2027, financed in part by $2.6B of new notes, and deleveraging will be the priority afterward. Aluminum prices have moderated but global inventories are historically low at about 42 days of consumption.
Why the Reaction Makes Sense
Investors rewarded the large EPS beat and cash flow, and looked past the revenue miss because sequential declines reflected timing of shipments and price moderation. The gains were modest because earnings are down from Q2 and Q4 costs will rise.
Risks
- Aluminum price volatility and the pace of moderation from recent highs.
- Tariff policy uncertainty, including a possible Canada carve-out.
- Added leverage and execution risk with the AliGroup deal.
- Western Australia mining approvals now extending into 2027.
Recommendation: HOLD
Operations are improving and cash generation is strong, but earnings peaked in Q2, Q4 costs are rising and the AliGroup deal adds leverage and execution risk. Hold existing positions; a more attractive entry may come if aluminum prices dip while operations stay on track.
