Nifty Reclaims 23,000 as Reliance Jumps 3% on a ₹30,213 Crore Jio IPO: What Is the Market Pricing In?

The quick take: The Nifty 50 pushed back above 23,000 in Thursday’s afternoon session, and the biggest single talking point was Reliance Industries, up roughly 3% as Jio Platforms’ record-sized IPO moved closer. Not everything rallied: Nestle India, IDBI Bank and a clutch of smallcaps slid. Figures below are intraday, from around 1:00 to 1:20 PM IST on October 15, 2026, and not closing levels.

What happened

The Sensex traded at 74,175.87 around 1:00 PM, up 1,393.98 points (1.92%) from the previous close of 72,781.89. The Nifty 50 was at 23,019.20 around 1:10 PM, up 396.50 points (1.75%) from 22,622.70. That is a sharp turn from the open, when the Nifty started at 22,671.30 and the Sensex at 72,965.80, only modestly above the prior close.

Breadth was narrower than the headline suggests. The Nifty MidCap index was up about 0.27% while the Nifty SmallCap index was down about 0.66%, so the rally was led by large caps rather than the broader market.

The Reliance and Jio angle

Reliance Industries, along with Bharti Airtel and Tech Mahindra, led the Nifty 50, with Reliance gaining about 3%. The trigger was news around the Jio Platforms IPO. Reports put the issue at up to 27 crore fresh equity shares, about ₹30,213 crore at the upper end of a reported ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 price band. Reported timelines suggest an anchor book on October 19, public subscription opening October 21 and listing around October 28.

Some details remain unconfirmed. Coverage describes the price band and dates as reported or tentative, to be confirmed in the red herring prospectus. Reports also cite a valuation of up to ₹10.3 lakh crore (about $107 billion) and say up to ₹27,500 crore of proceeds would go toward repaying borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm. Because it is a fresh issue, the money goes to the company rather than selling shareholders.

Where it hurt

  • Nestle India fell 8.9% to ₹1,260.50 even though its profit grew 41.63% year on year, a reminder that the market trades expectations rather than headlines.
  • IDBI Bank dropped about 6% after the government approved a 60.72% stake sale to Fairfax Financial for ₹52,878 crore.
  • PSU banks lagged, with Canara Bank (down about 7% on flat operating profit) and Bank of Maharashtra among the weakest in the Nifty PSU Bank index.

Key numbers at a glance

  • Nifty 50: 23,019.20 (+1.75%) versus a previous close of 22,622.70
  • Sensex: 74,175.87 (+1.92%) versus a previous close of 72,781.89
  • 23,000 on the Nifty is the level to watch at the close: whether the index holds it matters more than the intraday print

What to watch next

First, the closing levels: an afternoon spike that fades tells a different story from a close above 23,000. Second, the formal Jio Platforms IPO filing, which should settle the price band, dates and lot size that are only reported today. A very large issue also draws liquidity, so how the rest of the primary market and smallcaps behave around October 21 is worth tracking. Third, the Q2 results season continues, and Nestle’s reaction shows how unforgiving the market can be even on strong headline growth.
