Nifty Rose 1.6%, Smallcaps Just 0.1%: How Narrow Was the IT-Led Bounce?

Quick take: The headline said the Nifty 50 gained 1.6% on October 13, 2026. Underneath, the move leaned heavily on one sector. Nifty IT rose 5.22% while the Nifty Smallcap 100 managed only 0.11%. A rally can be real and still be narrow, and the gap between those two numbers is worth a closer look.

What happened

The Nifty 50 closed at 22,721.95, up 1.6%, and the Sensex finished near 73,034, up about 1.54%. The broader Nifty 500 gained 1.22% and the Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.06%. The Nifty Smallcap 100 closed at 19,447.40, up just 0.11%. Nifty Bank added 1.03% to 55,481.05.

The engine was IT. Nifty IT closed at 29,830.10, a gain of 1,480.5 points or 5.22%, the best of 144 equity indices that day. Among the large names, HCLTech rose 8.42% to ₹1,326, TCS gained 6.79% to ₹2,269.30, Tech Mahindra climbed 4.93% to ₹1,543.50, Wipro added 4.45% to ₹169 and Infosys rose 4.13% to ₹1,062.10. The Tata Group index gained 3.23%, the second-best performer.

Broad on paper, narrower underneath

Index breadth looked excellent: 137 of 144 NSE equity indices rose. Stock breadth was less emphatic. Of 2,944 mainboard stocks, 1,733 advanced and 1,170 declined, roughly 59% up, which NSE-based breadth data classes as mixed rather than a broad advance. When a handful of heavyweight index constituents move 4% to 8%, the index can post a large gain while the typical stock moves far less.

Context matters too. Even after the jump, Nifty IT sits about 26% below its 52-week high of 40,301.40, set on February 3, and it is down about 15.6% over one year. It is up about 6% over the past week, and up about 2.8% over three months. So this looks more like a sharp recovery inside a long drawdown than a fresh breakout.

The fear gauge eased, but not by much

India VIX fell 7.43% on the day to 14.12. That is still about 3.75% above its level a week earlier and about 14.9% above its level a month ago, so volatility is cooling from a recent bump rather than collapsing. Over the past year the VIX has ranged from 9.15 to 27.89, and 14.12 sits at roughly the 67th percentile of that window.

What to watch next

First, follow-through: does the strength spread beyond IT, or does the sector give some of it back? Second, whether midcaps and smallcaps start to keep pace; the Smallcap 100 lagging the Nifty by about 1.5 percentage points is the clearest sign of a lopsided session. Third, the remaining October results, with Tech Mahindra, ICICI Lombard and Hero MotoCorp among the names flagged for October 14. Finally, keep an eye on rupee moves, crude oil and foreign flows, which can change the tone quickly.

One session is a data point, not a trend. The useful habit is to check how many stocks joined the move, not just how far the index travelled.
