The Quick Take

What Drove the Quarter
- Interest income: The 13% rise in net interest income and core lending is the engine of the quarter and the clearest sign of balance sheet strength.
- Markets: Trading revenue grew 15% year over year, a solid result, but it fell from a record Q2 and landed just under expectations.
- Investment banking: Fees grew 14% year over year, again lower than the prior quarter.
- One-time hit: The $658M securities loss explains most of the gap between reported EPS and the Street.
What Management Said
Dimon pointed to “sticky inflation, elevated asset prices, rising interest rates” as forces shifting beneath the surface. He said the U.S. economy remains strong and that these forces “may be manageable, but we remain prepared for a wide range of outcomes.”
Why the Reaction Makes Sense
A headline EPS miss at the largest U.S. bank invites a pause, especially after a record second quarter set a high bar. But the miss is mostly explained by a non-operating securities loss, and the operating trends (revenue up 8%, lending income up 13%) are healthy. The more important signal is the macro warning: rising rates and sticky inflation can help bank income while raising credit risk later.
Risks
- Rising rates and sticky inflation could eventually pressure consumer and commercial credit quality.
- Trading and dealmaking revenue are cyclical and already slowed from Q2.
- Further securities marks could weigh on reported earnings if rates keep rising.
- Elevated asset prices leave markets-driven revenue exposed to a sharp reversal.
Recommendation: HOLD
JPMorgan remains the highest-quality franchise in U.S. banking, and the quarter’s miss was largely accounting-driven. But with the stock near record territory, a CEO warning about macro forces and trading revenue cooling, the near-term risk and reward looks balanced. Existing holders should stay. New buyers may prefer to wait for a pullback.
