A $15 Billion Lawsuit, a 2.6% Slide: What Is Weighing on Bank of Baroda Today?

Quick take: While the Nifty and Sensex barely moved late this morning, one large lender was having a very different day. Bank of Baroda slipped after NMC Healthcare founder B R Shetty reportedly filed a $15 billion suit against it, and Nifty PSU Bank was the weakest sectoral index at the time of the 11 AM update.

What happened

Reuters reports that the suit was filed in the Bombay High Court on October 13 against Bank of Baroda and 25 other defendants, including current and former employees. It alleges the bank helped enable a fraud tied to NMC’s 2020 collapse. The claim reportedly seeks $5 billion each in direct damages, consequential damages and reputational harm. These are allegations only; no court has established them.

In an exchange filing on October 14, the bank said it has not been served, cannot comment on untested pleadings and will defend the case firmly if served. It also said it is pursuing recovery proceedings in India and the UAE over roughly ₹2,800 crore of dues from Shetty, and holds several decrees against him.

The numbers

Reuters says the shares fell 2.6% on Tuesday and were down another 2.6% on Wednesday, near ₹231.4. Kotak Neo’s morning snapshot shows an opening price of ₹235.90 against a previous close of ₹238.43, and an early low of ₹230.40. Market capitalisation is about ₹1.2 lakh crore, while the claim is about ₹1.44 lakh crore per Kotak Neo, so the headline figure is larger than the bank’s entire market value. Treat that comparison as scale, not as likely liability.

Background matters here. In July 2026 the bank agreed to pay $600 million (about ₹5,700 crore) to settle claims brought by NMC’s administrators, without admitting wrongdoing. Shetty reportedly argues he was not party to that settlement and that his claims stand separately. The bank has also pointed to the 2024 dismissal of an earlier suit he filed in New York.

The wider tape

At 11 AM the Sensex was up 54.97 points (0.08%) at 73,088.75 and the Nifty up 4.10 points (0.02%) at 22,726.05, per Business Standard’s live blog. Nifty IT led, with TCS and Infosys among the gainers, while Nifty Midcap was down 0.27%. The same report ties the cautious tone to inflation worries as oil prices rise. HDFC Securities’ Vinay Rajani cites Nifty support at 22,580 and then 22,300.

The sector data does not say what drove the PSU bank weakness, so avoid reading the whole index move as a verdict on one lawsuit. Bank of Baroda is simply one visible stock-specific headline inside it.

What to watch next

First, whether Bank of Baroda is formally served and whether it discloses any provisioning view; the bank said it has no immediate liability unless a court order is issued or a provision must be set aside. Second, Canara Bank’s Q2 numbers, due today, for a read on public sector lenders’ asset quality and margins. Third, whether the Nifty holds the 22,580 area while oil and inflation remain in focus.
