Sensex Jumped About 1,064 Points as IT Roared, While CPI Hit 5.54%. Who Blinked?

Quick take: The Sensex finished the session roughly 1,064 points higher, and the Nifty 50 was near 22,702 in the closing auction, according to Business Standard’s live coverage. That is about a 1.5% jump for the Nifty from Monday’s close of 22,363.35, and it came on the same day that September CPI inflation surged to 5.54%. IT carried the market.

What happened

Monday’s close was the Sensex at 71,924.68, so a gain of about 1,064 points puts it near 72,990. The Nifty IT index rose more than 3% in the morning, and HCL Technologies, TCS and Tech Mahindra were among the top gainers. The breadth was narrow, though. Late-session reports showed the Nifty Midcap index up about 0.33% while the Nifty Smallcap index was down about 0.69%, a reversal from Monday, when smallcaps rose 1.42% even as the Nifty fell 0.7%.

Why it moved

The trigger was earnings. HCLTech reported a 21.2% rise in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹5,132 crore, with new deal bookings of $3.26 billion versus $2.57 billion a year earlier. TCS reported net profit up about 15% to ₹13,884 crore on revenue of ₹74,525 crore. For a sector that, by one report, is down about 23% since the start of 2026, a clean set of numbers was enough to spark a sharp bounce. The rupee also opened stronger, near 95.17 per dollar, after RBI measures to curb dollar demand.

The macro backdrop was less friendly. India’s September CPI rose 5.54% year on year, up from 4.82% in August, with food inflation at 7.74%. That leaves headline inflation closer to the RBI’s 6% upper tolerance limit. Markets looked through it for now, but it narrows the room for any easier-policy narrative. Separately, NPCI’s deferral of the UPI merchant discount rate rollout helped fintech shares recover intraday losses, and the Finance Minister said the government is open to hearing views on long-term capital gains tax.

Key numbers

  • Sensex: about +1,064 points on Monday’s close of 71,924.68
  • Nifty 50: about 22,702 in the closing auction, versus 22,363.35 on Monday
  • Nifty IT: up more than 3% in the morning session
  • India VIX on Monday: 15.25, up 6.1% on the day
  • September CPI: 5.54% (August: 4.82%); food inflation 7.74%
  • HCLTech Q2 FY27 net profit: ₹5,132 crore, up 21.2%

What to watch next

First, whether the IT bounce broadens beyond the two heavyweights as Infosys and other peers report. Second, how the RBI reads a CPI print this close to its upper band. Third, whether smallcaps recover the leadership they showed on Monday, since the divergence between large and small caps was the market’s main tension today. Fourth, foreign flows, which have been persistently negative this year. Note that closing figures here come from live coverage and may differ slightly from final exchange data.
