Quick take: The headline indices ended lower on Monday, October 12, but the market underneath told a different story. The Sensex fell 547.65 points (0.76%) to 71,924.68 and the Nifty 50 slipped 157.10 points (0.70%) to 22,363.35, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 1.42%.
What happened
Index heavyweights did the damage. FMCG, PSU bank and IT shares were the main drags, according to Business Standard’s closing report. Those are largely the groups that led Friday’s rebound, when the Nifty 50 gained 1.3% to 22,520.45 and the Nifty IT index rose about 3%, so some of Monday’s weakness looks like a pause after a sharp move. That reading is an interpretation, not a reported cause.
Breadth outside the large caps was firmer. The Nifty Midcap 100 edged up 0.08%, and the Nifty Media index was the top sectoral gainer on a day described as mixed. Realty names were reported up as much as 4% at one point in the session.
Stocks that moved
Suzlon Energy rose 4.4% to ₹39.31 on the NSE after announcing about ₹550 crore of investment for three AI-powered blade factories. Can Fin Homes gained 5.3% to ₹756.10. Both are examples of company-specific news, or a strong sector tailwind, overriding the weak index tape.
Rupee and domestic flows
The rupee posted its best single-day gain in six months after RBI support measures, a development that eases some pressure on importers and on foreign investors’ currency math. Separately, fresh AMFI data showed September SIP contributions at a record ₹32,490 crore, while equity fund inflows rose 31% from August to ₹38,307 crore. Total mutual fund AUM fell 4.3% month on month to ₹37.54 trillion, reflecting weaker market values during the month. I could not confirm today’s provisional FII and DII figures, so this post does not draw conclusions on institutional flows.
Key numbers
- Sensex: 71,924.68 (-547.65, -0.76%)
- Nifty 50: 22,363.35 (-157.10, -0.70%); Friday close 22,520.45
- Nifty Smallcap 100: +1.42%; Nifty Midcap 100: +0.08%
- India VIX closed Friday at 14.38, down 5.89% on the day
What to watch next
First, whether the Nifty holds the area around Friday’s rebound or gives it back, which would show how much of that move was positioning. Second, whether smallcap strength is broad or confined to a few news-driven names. Third, how the rupee behaves once the first burst of RBI-driven buying fades. Finally, IT earnings reactions, including HCLTech’s Q2 FY27 numbers released today, will keep steering the Nifty IT index.
